Activist Murdered

Hosur: An activist and former district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of all Types of Differently-Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) was murdered here in a crime of domestic abuse on Wednesday.

The victim Shyamala, was murdered by her husband Nanjudappa, who broke into her house on Wednesday night and bludgeoned her with a rod and hollow block.

Shyamala had been a prominent activist for the rights of differently-abled. She had played a critical role in aiding the 13-year-old hearing and speech impaired victim of gang rape in Denkanikottai in 2015, and taking forward the case jointly with TARATDAC and AIDWA.

According to the family, the couple had been estranged for over six months, and the accused had forced himself into the house at the time of commission of the crime.

Nanjudappa was reportedly already married with a son from an earlier marriage and had hidden it from Shyamala until she got wind of it.

Shyamala, a Dalit from modest background had continued her activism taking up the cause of differently-abled in the district through street-protests, and petitioning.

In a statement by TARATDAC, the State president B. Jhansirani, and State general secretary S. Namburajan, have condemned the murder and have alleged police inaction in her earlier complaints of domestic abuse against Nanjudappa.

According to the statement, Shyamala was being forced by her husband to cohabit in the house that was in her name.

Shyamala had filed a complaint of domestic violence against her husband at Hosur All Women Police Station.

However, no action was taken against the accused, and the abuse continued, says the statement.

Shyamala is survived by two daughters.
