Caste discrimination still rampant in Myagdi district

dalit-watch-jan-14-14MYAGDI: The Dalits in Shikha, Ghar, Pauddhar, Bhurung-Tatopani, Dana, and Narchyang VDCs are not allowed to enter the Khayar Barahai Lake in the district.

The lake, located at a high altitude, attracts thousands of people, especially on Janai Purnima. It is believed that a puja and visit to the lake will fulfil the wishes of devotees.

Two years back, a group of youth had beaten Baburam BK black and blue after he wanted to perform a puja at the lake. He was also told not to be seen near the site again.

“They thrashed me saying people from the lower-caste were not allowed to enter the lake and I should not dare to think of going there again,” BK said, adding, he has developed extreme hatred towards the so-called upper class people and his birth place after the incident. “I wonder how long we will have to bear such inhuman treatment,” he questioned.

The Dalit community has not reported the incident till date in view of possible consequences.

“Whenever we raised our voice against caste-based discrimination, we only received threats and are forced to be quiet,” said a Dalit on condition of anonymity.

Khayarbarahi Lake Construction Committee member Krishna Tilija, however, defended the institutionalised injustice saying the ‘rule’ has been followed for eons without anyone raising question. “We are only continuing the tradition as flouting the rule has only brought disasters.” Sikha VDC Secretary Taranath Subedi, argued initiatives should be taken to provide justice to the Dalits.
