Dalits stage protest against atrocities

sgrhf1Members of Dalit Associations Federation staged a protest in the city on Monday, condemning the atrocities on Dalits and the ‘inability’ of the authorities to contain them.

Former mayor Purushotham, who led the protest, said that the atrocities on Dalits peak in February-April during the village festivals. In Marballi village of Jayapura hobli and Holehundi village of HD Kote taluk, the upper caste Hindus have not allowed Dalits to celebrate the festivals for the past several years.

He said that Dalits would have no problem in celebrating the village festivals, if the local officials and police take precautionary measures and provide adequate security.

“Interestingly, not many are convicted in atrocity cases on Dalits as the police file ‘weak’ FIRs,” he alleged.
