End police harassment: Dalits

sgrhf26Dalits living in Kembatty Colony, under the Aathi Tamizhar Peravai banner, on Monday petitioned the District Collector seeking an end to harassment in the hands of the police.

The petition said that Sakthi alias Guru of Tiruvarur had stayed at Murugan’s place after he was referred to by a friend.

During the course of his stay there, Guru fell in love with Murugan’s relative Divya Bharathi, to which the residents of the area including Murugan had objected to.

The residents had assaulted Guru. Soon after the incident Guru eloped with Divya and they got married in Tiruchi.

The police from Tiruvarur picked up Saravanan and Vinod from the colony for their alleged involvement in the assault.

They were taken to Tiruvarur. Six months later, the police from Pollachi came to the colony and said that they had arrested Guru, who during interrogation had told them about the involvement of Murugan and a few other youth from the area in crimes.

The Dalits said that none of them were involved in any crime in Coimbatore or other parts of the State. Guru was giving out names with the sole intention of taking revenge for being assaulted.

The police should conduct a thorough investigation and not go by what Guru had told them, the petition said.
