Ex-CJI asks Dalits to fight ‘injustice’

Patna: Former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan on Sunday called upon the Dalit and marginalized community to unitedly fight the atrocities committed on them. Inaugurating ‘Dalit Dawedari Sammelan’, organized by SC/ST Workers’ Union here, the former CJI said the Dalit community was poorly represented in decision making bodies in the country. “The community should continue its fight against the system,” he added.
Over 1,000 members of the union participated in the programme. Ratan Lal, a Delhi University teacher, said just a few Dalit people have succeeded in making a mark in the society. “Dalits should be supported by the government to make progress. Withdrawal of reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in promotions in public sector is an attempt of the government to push such people into the corner,” he added.
Jignesh Mewani, a Gujarat-based Dalit activist, said Muslims and Dalits in the country should join hands to fight the injustice being meted out to them by the government.
