No burial ground for Dalits in Santhaiyur

Madurai: A petition was submitted to Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao on Monday at the weekly grievance meeting demanding cremation and burial ground for Dalits living in Santhaiyur village near Peraiyur.

In the petition submitted by A. R. Ayyankalai, a functionary of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, it was alleged that about 800 Dalits, belonging to Arunthathiyar and Paraiyar communities, had to bury or cremate the bodies of their dear ones on the banks of a stream.

Stating that the stream got flooded during rains, he said, “It becomes difficult to do the final rites if anyone dies. There were also occasions when buried bodies resurfaced because of flooding.” The Collector must ensure that the revenue administration identified land at a suitable place for the cremation/burial ground, he said.
