‘Non-Dalit’s support must for eliminating caste discrimination

sgrhf-dalit-watch-july-2013-image-11Lalitpur, July 17: Secretary at the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development, Shanta Bahadur Shrestha, has spoken of the need of infusing consciousness among the members of the non-Dalit communities that caste discrimination is a social crime, for getting rid of the existing caste discrimination in society.

Speaking at an interaction on the issue of Dalits’ emancipation organised by the Committee for the Uplift and Development of the Excluded, Oppressed and Dalit Communities here today, the Ministry Secretary underlined increasing the collaboration of the non-Dalits for abolishing discrimination based on caste prevalent in Nepali society.

Coordinator of the United Political Dalit Struggle Committee, Kesh Bahadur Pariyar, alleged that the government did not want to stabilize the rights of the Dalits achieved through different movements and the structure established on its foundation. He called on the State to ‘listen to’ the Dalits.

Chairperson of the National Dalit Commission, Sushila Sripali, said that the different bodies set up by the State for the uplift and protecting the rights of the Dalit community were hamstrung with lack of adequate funds. Vice-chairman of the Committee Khim Bahadur BK presided over the programme.

On the occasion, 12 various individuals including actresses Rekha Thapa, and Anita KC, singers Yash Kumar and Bin Gandharva, and chiefs of the Dalit sister organizations of different political parties, were honoured in recognition of their contribution to promoting the rights and welfare of the Dalit community.
