Protest against untouchability at eatery
Coimbatore: TamilarViduthalaiIyyakam staged a road roko in front of the collectorate on Monday, demanding action against the eatery owners in Panappatti, near Coimbatore, who blatantly practiseuntouchability. As many as 57 protesters in the city were arrested and later let off.
Deccan Chronicle was the first to expose the ‘two-shed’ system of discrimination in a private eatery at Panapatti village, in Coimbatore, in its issue dated September 3, 2014.
The TamilarViduthalaiIyyakam and Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Movement petitioned the Coimbatore collector and the superintendent of police to stop the practice of untouchability.
Quoting the DC report in their petition on Monday, they demanded action against the eatery owners who served food for Dalits in a run-down shed behind the eatery while the upper caste people were offered food in a tiled shed.
Over 50 members of TamilarViduthalaiIyyakam, led by Ven Mani, staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore collectorate, demanding an end to the discriminatory practices. Ven Mani thanked the media, especially DC, which highlighted the practice of untouchability at Panappatti.
