Smart classrooms to check dropout of SC/ST students

dalit-watch-oct-08CHENNAI: With a view to augmenting the educational facilities, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday ordered setting up of ‘smart classrooms’ in 100 higher secondary schools functioning under the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, from the current academic year.

The Chief Minister has granted a sum of Rs 5.05 crore towards the purpose and for buying computers and science equipment required for the classrooms.

Under this scheme, one of the classrooms in these schools would be converted into a smart classroom (20 x 20).  Training would be provided to two teachers in the school who wished to teach the students in these smart classrooms, an official release here said.

The release said the State government had been taking many steps to bring down the dropout rate among the SC/ST communities and the smart classroom would be yet another measure in this direction.

The Chief Minister has also sanctioned Rs 11.56 crore for supplying geographical maps depicting India, Tamil Nadu and its districts for each of the 1.48 lakh classrooms in Tamil Nadu under the School Education Department and the Directorate of Elementary Education.
