Social boycott of Dalits in Nagaladinne village

Kurnool: The upper castes have allegedly announced social boycott of Dalits, snapped the water supply pipeline to the SC Colony and threatened to slap a fine of Rs. 5,000 on villagers who interact with them and the traders in Nagaladinne village in Rudravaram mandal in Kurnool district.

The boycott was announced after Pullanna and Elisha, who eke out a living by digging pits in the village grave yard, refused to do so because of ill-health to bury the body of a nonagenarian Bala Thimmaiah, who died on Saturday.

Enraged at their refusal, the villagers broke the pipeline causing hardship to 14 Dalit families. The aggrieved Dalits lodged a complaint in the Rudravaram police station.

Kula Vivaksha Vyatireka Porata Samithi district general secretary M.D. Anand Babu flayed the social boycott and demanded registration of a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against those responsible. It was absurd to announce social boycott as the two Dalits expressed their inability to dig pits because of ill-health and old age, he said. Mr. Anand Babu said he apprised SC/ST Commission chairman Karem Sivaji of the incident.
