Tension after Ambedkar statue is desecrated

sgrhf15KANPUR: Tension gripped Shiv Katra locality in Chakeri police area on Monday following desecration of a statue of BR Ambedkar by unidentified miscreants.

Local police rushed to the spot and pacified the agitated mob. A case was registered and cops were deployed in the locality to prevent any untoward incident. “Some unidentified people desecrated statue of BR Ambedkar late on Sunday night,” a police official at Chakeri PS said.

Police have detained a few persons for questioning on suspicion.

According to a local, Roop Narain, a statue of Ambedkar stalled near Krishna Nagar KESA house under Chakeri police station, was found desecrated by the locals early on Monday morning. As the locality is dominated by Dalit community, the news spread like wildfire and hundreds of people gathered at the spot.

Later, a large number of people staged a dharna demanding stringent action against those involved in the incident. They also washed the statue with milk and demanded necessary security. Police said prima facie it appeared to be a case of mischief by some anti-social elements who wanted to disturb peace in the area. “We are looking for the culprits but no arrest has been made so far,” said SSP Yashasvi Yadav. Shiv Katra is a locality situated close to Kanpur-Lucknow National Highway-25.
