UK team to meet dalit victims from Mirchpur in Hisar

dalit-watch-dec-08CHANDIGARH: A three-member team of researchers, including two UK nationals, will meet dalit victims, including people from Mirchpur where the community members were attacked by upper caste men in 2010, in Hisar on December 17 and 18.

UK nationals John Griffin and Jilly Jilna, along with Pune-based scholar David Kadam, will talk to the victims in Hisar on their plight. The team, associated with New Delhi-based NGO Human Rights Law Network, will record the statements of victims, their families and also review the status of trial in their cases.

The NGO’s Haryana coordinator Rajat Kalsan, who is pursuing Mirchpur case and all other cases related to atrocities on dalits in Haryana courts, said the purpose of the visit is to have an independent study on incidents and their legal status.

“The team will submit its report and the NGO will take it up with the SC/ST commission. If required the report will be made the base of a public interest litigation to be filed in Supreme Court,” said Kalson.

The team will also interact with the relatives of the dalit girl who was gangraped and killed by upper caste men in a Jind village in August this year.
