Pondy university to hold seminar on dalits in Hindi cinema
Puducherry: The department of Hindi, Pondicherry University, will hold a two-day national conference, ‘Hindi cinema: Dalit and tribal discourse’ on October 5 and 6 on the university premises.
The conference will focus on the portrayal of dalit and tribal communities in cinema.
More than 30 delegates from all parts of the country will participate in the conference. The key areas of discussions include absence of dalit-tribal reality in Indian cinema, oppression of the dalit-tribal by the upper classes, caste politics, constitutional rights of the dalits, condition of dalit-tribal women, dalits as proletariat class and dalits in urban life among others.
Pondicherry University vice-chancellor in-charge Anisa B Khan will inaugurate the conference in the presence of former editor of %’Jansatta’ Om Thanvi and former editor of ‘India Today’ Dilip Mandal. Fandry film director Nagraj Manjule, dalit writer Sheoraj Singh Bechain, India’s first tribal film director Biju Toppo and documentary film maker Ashwini Kumar Pankaj will be some of the resource persons for the conference.
The two documentary films, Biju Toppo’s Kudukh language documentary, ‘Kora Raji’ and Tamil Bodhi Kala group’s ‘Padyi’ will be screened during the conference.
Ashutos Chandan’s ‘Graphity India’ will perform two plays related to dalit and tribal issues. The conference will also include a dalit-tribal poetry session.
