41 Dalit leaders released from Sangrur jail

dalit-watch-Aug-14-14Sangrur :After two months in custody, the 41 Dalit leaders, who had been arrested by the police for attacking police personnel during the auction of the reserved common land in BaladKalan village of Bhawanigarh sub-division, were released from the jail here on Friday following court orders.

The court of additional chief judicial magistrate Birender Singh Romana ordered their release as the police did not demand their further custody.

However, after the leaders, who have been booked under sections 353 and 186 of the IPC,  will have to come for the next hearing on October 10.

Earlier, on August 6, the police had dropped the attempt to murder (Section 307) charge against them saying the injuries inflicted on cops by the protesting Dalits were not life-threatening in nature.

It may be recalled here that these leaders were arrested under sections 307, 353 and 186 of the IPC for attacking policemen on duty on June 27. They were produced before the court which sent them to judicial custody, which was later extended till August 22.

According to sources, the Dalit of the district, who have also formed ZameenPrapatiSangrashSamiti, have now decided to hold another protest march on August 25 against the district administration for not giving the reserved land to samiti members.
