Dalit killed for not returning to work

Patiala: The police booked a resident of Sangrur district under Sections of murder for allegedly killing a 25-year-old man who was kidnapped from his house and then murdered. The deceased has been identified as Dharminder Singh of Daroli village in Patiala.

The family of the victim said that the accused had kidnapped Dharminder from his house and took him to an unknown place in a jeep. They claimed that they were out of the station when Dharminder was kidnapped but on their return, the neighbours informed them about the kidnapping. In the complaint, Dharminder’s father, Sahib Singh told police that his son used to work as a combine driver and sometimes accompany him as foreman in the agricultural fields. He claimed that accused kidnapped Dharminder as he refused to return to work as a combine driver.

Speaking over the phone to TOI, Dharminder’s sister said that Dharminder borrowed Rs 5000 from the accused landlord and promised to work but after some days of work he allegedly refused to work for him. “My brother was kidnapped on September 24 and we came to know this after three days following which we lodged a complaint with the police but no action was taken. The accused landlordowns agricultural fields in Nabha where Dharminder’s dead body was found by the police, ” she said.

Jai Inder Singh Randhawa, SHO, Sadar Nabha police station, said, “There do not seem to be any dalit angle however, we are yet to ascertain the cause of death as the post-mortem reports are awaited.”
