Dalit woman among 2 shot over irrigation water in Bihar

Patna: A Dalit woman was among two persons shot dead while another woman was injured in a gunfight between two groups over sharing irrigation water at a village in Bihar’s Nawada district on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Indu Devi and Prabhu Rajvanshi, both residents of Khaira village falling under the Akbarpur police station in the district. The bodies were sent to the Nawada Sadar hospital for a postmortem.

The injured, Leela Devi, was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Soon after the incident, locals got the Nawada town market closed demanding compensation for the deceased. SP Sudhir Kumar Porika said adequate security had been deployed to avert any untoward incident.

The Dalit face of JD-U and former minister in the Nitish Kumar cabinet, Shayam Rajak, visited the injured at the hospital. He also met the families of the deceased.

Bihar chief of Bhim Army Amar Azad demanded a compensation of Rs 20 lakh each for the families of the deceased and a government job.
