The petition also sought compensation for the victims’ families.

The petitioner, S BaskarMathuram, the youth wing secretary of PuthiyaThamilagam, said that 12 Dalits were killed in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts in the last two years. These murders, he said, were committed by those belonging to the dominant intermediate castes. He alleged that the real accused have gone scot free and police have also failed to protect witnesses in the case. Besides, filing of charge-sheet has been delayed to save the accused.

Admitting the plea, a bench comprising Justices S Tamilvanan and V S Ravi ordered notice to the State Chief and Home Secretaries and to the DGP returnable in two weeks.
